FAQ
A little know-how before you roll. Find answers on blade fit, the five angles, everyday care, and shopping with EdgeRoll.
The set & the method
How does a rolling knife sharpener work?
The magnetic base supports a compatible blade at your chosen angle. You move the roller along the bevel with light pressure, letting the abrasive remove small amounts of metal. Work both sides of a double-bevel knife and check progress regularly. The base helps hold the angle; you still control the pressure, contact, and pace.
Which five angles are included?
The guide is marked 12°, 15°, 17°, 19°, and 22°. Start with your knife maker’s recommended sharpening angle and check whether it is expressed per side or as a total edge angle. A smaller number is not automatically better. If none of the positions suits your knife, choose another method or ask a professional.
Will it work with every kitchen knife?
Use it with magnetic steel knives that have plain, double-bevel edges. Check magnetic grip, blade height, and roller clearance first. Narrow blades, thick bolsters, and curved tips need particular care. Ceramic knives, serrated edges, scissors, and single-bevel blades need a different method. Chipped or damaged edges may need professional repair.
What do the 400# and 1000# markings mean?
They identify the two nominal abrasive grades: approximately 400 grit for sharpening and 1000 grit for a finer finish. Grit numbers are approximate and are not independently certified measurements; grading can differ between abrasive systems. We do not claim a certified diamond composition or a fixed abrasive lifespan. Use light pressure and check the edge rather than relying on a fixed pass count.
What comes in the box?
The set includes a magnetic five-angle wood base, a wood rolling sharpener, and dual sharpening abrasives marked 400# and 1000#, presented in a fitted box. Knives, cutting boards, and other styling props in the photos are not included. The complete set is $59 USD.
Should I use water or oil?
Keep this set dry in use. Do not add water or oil to the abrasive faces, and do not soak the wood base. Brush away loose dust after sharpening, then clean the knife separately before preparing food. A barely damp cloth is enough for the wood, followed by immediate drying.
How many passes will my knife need?
There is no useful one-size-fits-all count. Blade steel, existing angle, edge condition, and technique all affect the work needed. Make controlled passes and check progress safely. Stop if the knife slips, the roller catches, or contact is uneven; extra pressure will not fix a poor setup.
How is this different from a sharpening stone?
A rolling setup uses a magnetic guide to support one of its marked angles while the abrasive moves along the blade. With a freehand stone, you move the knife and maintain the angle yourself. Stones offer flexibility in angles and abrasive choice; a rolling set offers a repeatable setup for compatible blades. Both take care, practice, and good control.
Care & replacements
How should I clean the set?
Put the knife away safely first. Lift loose metal dust with a soft, dry brush and collect it with a cloth. Wipe the wood with a barely damp cloth, then dry immediately. Keep the roller and abrasive faces dry. Do not soak the wood, oil the abrasives, or put the set in a dishwasher. Wash and dry the knife separately before food preparation.
How often should I sharpen?
Sharpen when cutting performance declines, rather than on a fixed daily schedule. The interval depends on blade steel, cutting board, frequency of use, and knife care. Remove only as much metal as needed. Never slide a finger along an edge to check sharpness.
Can I buy replacement rollers now?
Replacement rollers are coming soon. We are not taking orders or preorders, and there is no announced price or release date. The product page will list the compatible fit, abrasive grades, and pack contents when the accessory is ready.
How long do the abrasives last?
Wear varies with blade steel, pressure, cleaning, and frequency of use, so we do not promise a set number of sessions. If cutting action drops, remove loose dust and check the setup before trying again. Stop using a loose or damaged abrasive surface; pressing harder can damage the blade or tool.
Where should I store it?
Let every part dry before returning it to its fitted box. Keep it away from a wet sink, prolonged moisture, and direct heat, and out of children’s reach. Store knives separately rather than leaving a blade attached to the guide. Check the magnetic grip and roller movement before the next session.
Ordering & shipping
What does shipping cost?
The displayed US rate is $7.99 below $59 and free from $59, so one complete set meets the threshold. All prices are USD. Delivery estimates are not yet published; see Shipping for the current rate guide and delivery status.
When will my set arrive?
There is no delivery estimate to quote yet. Dispatch times, transit ranges, and tracking details will be published before shipping begins. We do not show a countdown or promise an arrival date without a confirmed service.
What should I know about returns?
Read the Returns page before ordering. It explains the planned 30-day policy for unused, complete sets and the return details that will be published before orders open. Your applicable consumer rights, including EU withdrawal and faulty-goods rights, take priority over a voluntary policy.
Are tax and duties included in the displayed total?
The cart shows the product subtotal and the listed shipping rate. It does not calculate sales tax, VAT, or import duties. Final tax and duty treatment will be disclosed before orders open. Review the payment status note in your cart before continuing.
